We'll first look at frame rate. The following four images show 4 fps, 8 fps, 16 fps, and 24 fps. Each runs for a total of 10 seconds. (Historically a Movie in a theater runs at 24 fps, so that is obviously fast enough for smooth animation. European television runs at 25 fps, and the US TV runs at about 30 fps. (29.97 actually but that has to do with keeping sound synchronized with the program and not important here.) | |||

After playing each animation it should be apparent that the 4 fps looks more like a fast slide show with very bumpy movement, and that the 8 fps looks better but the eye still easily sees little jumps between frames. At 16 fps the gem rotates with almost smooth animation and at 24 fps it works fine. For most WEB use the selection of a frame rate between about 12 fps and 16 fps is adequate for all except a few more demanding motion studies.
The file size of the 4 fps is very appealing, but we can work on the 16 fps to get it much closer. All of these animations were carried out with the same codec and selected parameter values. |
